Action for Democracy denounces Maduro’s violent electoral fraud, urges democratic transition // July 29, 2024

Washington, D.C. July 29, 2024 - The people of Venezuela clearly expressed their voice in record high numbers at yesterday’s presidential election, unambiguously supporting a democratic transition of power.

However, to maintain their grip on power, the Maduro dictatorship has resorted to unprecedented levels of violent voter and witness suppression, intimidation tactics, and massive electoral fraud.

The fraudulent announcement by the National Electoral Council (CNE), claiming that Nicolas Maduro won the Presidential elections by a margin of 7% stands in stark contrast to months of independent surveys, civil society-run voting tabulations, exit polls, and quick counts on election day, which consistently projected an opposition lead of 34-36%.

These major discrepancies, and the Maduro regime’s refusal to release the full vote count and provide access to vote tallies offer irrefutable evidence of massive electoral fraud and manipulation. These actions undermine the democratic process and the fundamental rights of the Venezuelan people.

Whilst the free world has universally condemned Maduro’s flagrant attempt at staying in power against the will of the Venezuelan people, dictatorships around the globe, amongst others Vladimir Putin’s Russia, Xi Jinping’s China, and Ali Khamenei’s Iran have endorsed the corrupt and violent practices of Maduro - showcasing yet again that autocratic encroachment is a global and interconnected threat.

Action for Democracy strongly condemns the blatant and violent electoral fraud committed by the Maduro regime. We urge the international community to apply maximum pressure, calling for the accurate, transparent, and auditable tabulation of peoples’ votes, and an orderly democratic transition. The Maduro regime, responsible for one of the largest contemporary humanitarian crises forcing 7.7 million Venezuelans to flee their homeland, must allow the democratic transition to begin immediately. The will of the Venezuelan people must prevail.
